My girlfreind is having some problems with her computer. For some reason the computer crashes everytimethat she opens up her IE webrowser. I sent her Firefox and she set it up but it would crash then too. She can use the messengers still. She ran a virus scanner so I don't think that the viruses are the problem. So, any suggestions of programs we could try running to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

have you tried scanning for spyware/adware/malware? if those options fail, then some system files are messed up and a OS reinstallation is probably needed.

I think she ran a spyware remover so far. I'll send her a adware remover, I'll have to find a malware remover. I'm not sure what it is. Her computer is canadian. If that makes any difference.

spyware, adware, malware removers are typically the same. There are two good ones out there. the one from Lavasoft USA called Adware and one called HiJack This

hmm...is that so? I've never used HiJack This so yeah. If that is the case, then the one by Lavasoft is the want you want to use.

Google for Spybot Search And Destroy, also, as that's a fairly good removal tool.

Also, HijackThis! is for EXPERTS ONLY. You can usually post it at a messageboard (I believe one is listed in the readme for it) and they will help you figure out what to do, but don't go being dumb and deleting everything.

You can run HijackThis! without causing a problem -- just don't actually go do anything else (like deleting things) though till you have the results looked at by somebody familiar with that kind of thing.

I would run Ad Aware and/or Spybot Search and Destroy first and see how that goes. Both are very good. Avoid Microsoft's AntiSpyware beta, and similarly Giant AntiSpyware -- in my experience they are a little overzealous and remove some stuff you may need too!

If you still have no luck, then I would consider running HijackThis! and post the results to the HijackThis! forums where people are able to help out.

Also, which virus scanner are you running? Is it up to date?

You can also post the results here, none stops you from doing that.

Spybot Search And Destroy is my anti-spyware of choice, althought having ad-aware too is not a bad idea.

It can be a virus too, thoose also love to take up system resources. I remember when I had this dreaded virus that caused memory leaks. -.-;

well, if it wasn't her only computer I think we would. She got a spyware running and delete the spyware finally. she had 6,201. I'm thinking she has no firewall for those to get in. So I'm gonna have to download a firewall for her. Thank god for the free software sticky so I know where to find one.

Spyware doesn't usually get in through lack of a firewall, so much as an insecure browser. Get Firefox and Thunderbird and teach them a bit about not opening every random program that gets sent to them.
