I've been thinking about Optimism vs Pessimism. Does it look like I have it right?

An optimist will value happiness over understanding. They will filter out the painful truth through apathy or denial and will only let in the happy truths. They will feed on the "happy truth"s and not let the darkness of the world bother them. Pros to having an attitude such as this are having a feeling of being at peace with your environment and not letting bad things get you down. Cons to this are: If an optimist cannot find "happy truth"s then they will restort to making up their own versions of the truth. An optimist may deny the evil in the world and deny the evil in themselfs, leaving no room for self-improvement. If the painful truth presents itself as undeniable or unignorable, the optimist will most likely resort to some sort of escape from the reality that they have just seen a glimpse of, whether it be alchahol, drugs, sex, or suicide.

A pessimist values understanding over happiness. They will accept the whole bigger picture and try to get a good view on it. Seeing on how the world is filled with darkness, the pessimist will often feel overwhelmed by the painful truths. They also might try and fix the problems they see around them. They might be seen as dwelling in negativity, but seeing how there is no reason to fix what isnt broken, negativity is the only thing that can be attempted to be solved, which gives the impression that the pessimist dwells on negativity. Pro's to being a pessimist are knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. A pessimist may accept the fact that there is evil and try to deviate from it. Cons to being a pessimist are understanding the darkness that is society and the world and inside the person's own heart, causing feelings of self-loathing and a resentment towards society.

You understand that those are complete opinions and biases, and won't work in every situation.

The words have definitions, you know. You are right, in some aspects and in some occasions, but it wouldn't be right to generalize in such a way.

... why is this in World Affairs/Debate?

Anyways, I think you're definitely over generalising.

You can never say it's definate when it come to personality traits. I would call myself an optimist but that's becuse how I work. I get sad over something for half a hour as most or even shorter and then I think "It's just not the biggest thing in the world" and forget about it or tries to actually do something about it. But I don't ignore the truth, I just try to take my way around it. And surpringly it works most of the times.

I do escape from reality at times, sure but eh... I wouldn't say that optimists does suicide.

And there is severeal types of Optimism and Pessimism. Basically they're just basic personality traits, which there is alot variations of...

Concurred. I'm booting this out of my jurisdiction and into the jurisprudence of YD in General.

This really isnt much of a generalisation of people and is more of an analysation of the people around me.

And then projecting it on a wider range of people. That is a story book generalization my friend.

The difference is I KNOW there's more to it than this. I KNOW that there will be people who are going to not fit either of these. I KNOW that this is probably wrong in some ways.

Can you stop quoting people that posted last?

Neb sounds like a pessimistic person... he sees that view as the correct one, and optimism as the wrong one. I prefer to see things as they are, but I'm usually optimistic.

It was more of a: "Tell me what I'm doing wrong" thing.

See? That must mean that even though that there are more people than these two catagories, I must have something right with these two catagories.

Overall I think the comparison is quite hypothetical. Don't ask me why, I'll confuse myself.

Pessimism tends to cause heart problems and shortens your life expectancy.
A pessimistic attitude does'nt just come out of the blue. It usually develops from stress, depression, or boredom. These factors cause your blood pressure to rise and stay at an unhealthy rate and it eventually clogs your arteries, which can increase the risk of a heart attack.

Optimism causes people to lose focus of reality. Although it's pleasurable to have, it's not always safe. You'll do stupid things and think it's alright when it actually isn't. You can get stuck in sticky situations much easier. Eventually you lie to yourself and your perspective becomes distorted. But you won't feel any pain from your wrong-doings, so go you!

I think you both (Cruel Justice and Nebetsu) have a pessimistic view of optimism. =D

I consider myself an optimist. All that means to me is that I think things tend to work out for the best. I'm talking about in one's life, not necessarily in the world as a whole.
