Ok, so me and my friend went to the local gamestop in Mishuwaka Indiana. So I'm just looking at different games cause, well, I don't have money to actually buy a game, and my friend goes right to the PS2 section, picks up DBZagas and to the PC area and grabs Half Life 2. So he goes up to buy the game, and the guy at the counter's like, "Woah there, do you have a good enough computer to run this game? I mean, you're gonna need to have at least a gig of ram and a brand new Radeon300 or higher." Now I'll have you, my friend was wearing his little mario + mushroom = Bigmario sweatshirt, obviously showing he knows something about computers. And yes, i know a Radeon300 is nothing and a gig of ram is excessive(well, not excessive, but more than necessary). And my friend was at the register for a good 10-15 minutes trying ot convince this guy he wasn't gonna come back with the game to return it cause his computer wasn't good enough. My friend has a 3.2 gHz processor, 1 gig of ram, a nVidia6800 with 256mb, and just about everything necessary for gaming. Man, I love those crazy GameStop employees.

Sorry, this is really random, but hey, i think it's interesting, submit your own "random gamestop employees being annoying" story.

...No, it means he knows something about Nintendo.

Eh, the guy probably just wanted to tease you. I doubt the majority of employees at that location or any other GameStop are like that. (...Anya? Can you confirm that?)

Though its not a chain like Gamestop or anything, a buddy of mine owns a gameing store down in Japan, and I remember hearing that he liked to bust people's chops every once and a while, usualy when they'd seem vulnerable. I remember him telling me once of a couple of dorktards who were fanboying about in the back of the store, and he just happened to mention that whatever character wasnt exactly the best at said game. Of course, they go batshit. He calmly loads up sai game on a demo unit and has a quick match with the boys. After owning their asses, they left, leaving their consoles that they had originaly left ot be repaired. He decided to be "generous" and make a special modification. I forget what he did exactly, but I remember something about only being able to play European games for a certain amount of time on those particular consoles Bottom line is, people who work in a game store are bound to be bored shitless at one point or another, and they take it out on random customers. Or something.

Well, we don't have Gamestop here, but I did have to go to a place called "A & R Computers" with my... I guess you'd call him my step-grandfather.

We weren't there for long when the salesman spotted us -- an elderly gentleman and a girl. So he came over to where we were looking at the prices on CD burners, and started trying to convince John (step-grandfather) to buy overpriced things he doesn't need.

Like your average bad salesman, he was using all kinds of -- what are to the average consumer -- confusing terms to try to convince John that everything was the latest and greatest and must-have. When he wasn't using technical terms, he was talking to John like he was an idiot.

Then he turned to me and tried the same on me. It was only after he said "this one here burns CD's and DVD's, like the DVDs you can watch movies on" to me, and I said irritably "I know!" that he actually looked at me properly.

On that particular day, my shirt read:

linux.conf.au 2004

The guy noticably blanched, said something about "Oh, you know uh.. linux.. heh...um...so you'd know what you're uh.. after.. huh?" , and promptly left us alone, where I was free to explain to John things in layman's terms and buy what we WANTED.

Maybe it doesn't even mean THAT. Target was selling 'em. Hell, I could've gotten their Trans Am one, but it doesn't mean I know how to change the battery in my car.

I should get a shirt like that, after all i'm quite litirate with Linux. I don't feel lost whenever i'm using the terminal anymore.

I never remember any employed man or woman in a shop blabs on me like that, the worst that happened was someone asked if "Are you looking for something?", I told him that I was just looking around. Then they probably don't bother with me, since I do look computer litirate from afar. That's not a good thing actually... -.-;

If someone tries to blab me down with some sales talk, I probably shoves back wierd computer related questions that put them down. Or tell them to do "rm -rf /*". (I did test that once on a live distro! That was... intresting xD)

I've heard so many horror stories about those kind of places...but, as I recall, the Funcoland in Port Huron, MI, was actually halfway decent.

And I also hate the "Can I help you?"...they should give me the chance to actually LOOK for something.

Did'nt happen in gamestop per se', but I did have a lot of those moments of stupidity in Funco Land. I was looking for some games and the guy at the register was playing some N64 game. I asked him a question about when memory cards would come in and after the 3rd time, he said, "Kid, there not gonna come if you get on my damn nerves. I'm busy, come back later." I asked him if they have Half-life, even though I could see it behind him. He said, "Aw hell! You think we have that game? That's not Half-life it's a display box! Now get out!". I told him I assumed that it was for sale since it DID have a price tag on it and it's been around for months. I also asked if anyone else could help me and he died on the game, slammed the controller and said, "You're REALLY pissing me off." He told the manager on me and the guy came by and asked, "What seems to be the problem?". I asked, "Did'nt you hear what your employee said? He's not helping me, he's playing a game.". The manager gave me a really bs answer and said, "He's only doing his job, if you cannot deal with it, you can leave. Nexttime ask some useful questions and don't ask me to come and solve your problems, because it's not going to happen.". I was kicked out of Funco Land, never to come back. I hate all of them because the employees slack off and don't help their customers.

There are two special EBs in Rhode Island that I know of. They are within ten miles of each other.

The first EB, at the Warwick Mall, is a "Poser" store. It is filled with tall, well-groomed salesmen that talk in projected voices about things they have no clue about. I was in said store with one of my friends once, and we were talking about Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, which was coming out soon at the time. He was really looking forward to it, and the store manager himself came up to us, claiming to have played the game and describing several features that he said he knew were gonna be in the game. Immediately after he left, my friend told me he was filled with BS because what he had told us was actually all in a press release at Gamespot.com, and many of the features he mentioned had been scrapped, along with a total lack of demos released. Occasionally I go in there and see the staff arguing about sports games.

The second EB, at the Rhode Island Mall, is a better store. It's filled with stout, well-flabbed, introverted gamers that actually play the games they're selling. They WILL tell you, in the case of two games of differing prices and quality, which game is crappy and which game is not, regardless of whether or not it means they lose money. They will tell you about games you want to hear about, and won't mention particular statistics from the yearly sports game releases, like the WMEB. In fact, the staff from RIM tried to encroach on the staff at WM by hosting a Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament, but the credit for the idea was taken by the WM staff because they were taller and more assertive.

I can't stand poser stores, because more often than not they'll try to shaft you. I appreciate the hardcore stores and the staff that plays the games they sell instead of just reading press releases and assuming they know everything about games after that.

I remember once my mom took my brother to EB to buy GTA:VC and the guy spent 10 minutes trying to talk my mom out of letting him buy it.

Also, Tarale's story is one of the funniest things I've read recently XD.

I'd like to get a shirt that reads:

<?php

if ($is_salesman && $question == "Can I help you?") {
die("No.");
}

?>

There's nothing more I hate than going to some game store and being told that I should buy this and that.

The local GameCrazy sells a lot of stuff and usually has a lot of people who know what the hell they're doing and the EB just has a few people (like... 2) who stand behind the counter and sell stuff without really talking to you (unless you engage in conversation)

But yes, I really hate that damned "Can I help you?"

I'm lucky. The people at the Gamestop near me remembered me by name, and never pulled any of that stuff on me. Of course, I've often boggled people at Radio Shack when I come in and ask for a WIRED router or a certain, exact model of WAP. But at the gamestop, they just got me what I asked for, and tirelessly answered my questions about when a certain rare game thing or another would appear. I bought a ton of old games from them, and while they've probably forgotten my name by now, I'll never forget that time they fixed the Zelda 2 Cart by spraying industrial foaming cleaner on the connector... I gotta ge me some of that stuff!

I used to work at GameStop, and a lot of these people sound like douches. However, when they ask "Can I help you" as soon as you walk in, that's just doing their job. We're expected to greet every customer and see if there's anything they need.

I don't mind somebody asking "Can I help you?" -- in fact I see it as a sign of good customer service, although usually I'll tell them that I'm just looking for the moment, and then if I DO need help, I'll know who to ask.

What I really hate -- and what I seem to get a lot (perhaps because I am a girl) -- is salesman that try to take me for a ride.

There is unfortunately still a feeling that girls and old people can't know anything about computers, and I'm positive that, until the guy looked at my shirt, my step-grandfather and I looked like prime targets. Once he saw my Linux Conference shirt, he backed off, but before that, I'm sure the salesman thought he'd found the perfect suckers.

I am also not a fan of the people in an Apple store here called "Next Byte". Sometimes they are really friendly, but sometimes they just seem to revert to saying "it's better cause it's made by Apple".

Yeah, my brother worked at Gamestop (before he got fired for stealing <3 ) and he said the employees have to greet a customer as soon as they walk in, even if that employee is in the process of talking to another customer. =o =o

We have to greet everyone that comes in, because it could be a sercet shopper, and if so, we get points taken off for something like that.

Its always about numbers, it seems.

Yea, we like to be pricks sometimes, but for the most part, the guys at my store, are just playing around. We like to have fun while at work, you know. I mean, come on, its a gamestore, we're supposed to be laid back.

Like today, some kids were returning some games, and we were asking them if they broke the games, or throwing the discs around.

And then you get the kids who think they're "all that". Also today, some middle school punks come in, with a can of power juice that's called "Pimp Juice", and they were like, "oh you know you want some pimp juice" and shit like that. Really cocky too, but I won't get into it.

What bothers me (besides some other things) is when minors get mad at us (sometimes their parents get mad too) for asking ID on a M-rated game. I'm sorry, but I've worked too damn hard to get where I'm at (I might have my own store by Christmas), and I'm not about to get fired b/c some kid wants an M-game. Not my problem the FCC wants to slap on a rating system for games. Maybe if the parents taught their kids better...but anyway....lets not make this into a rant.

We try to have fun at my store, and we're honest. We've got those who hate Xbox and those who hate Ps2. And we all respect that. And if someone wants a game that we heard/read/know sucks, you'll know about it. That's why we have used games....so you can see that it sucks and bring it back in 7 days (shameless plug).

Oh how I love it when customers (mostly guys) come in and see me there, and then they ask something, and I throw them a curve with my gaming intel/knowledge. Save for Xbox, since I just got one, and I love Ps2 way too much to really care about Xbox.

Okay...this isn't a rant thread...I really need to stop right.....now.
