Does anyone know of a good text editor out there? I tried Zophar but they are in DOS and for some reason my computer can't use DOS. It would be better if the progs were in Windows. Also, if I need to know something about Hex stuff for text, tell me.

You will aslo need a table maker, to use with the Hex editor. I use Tag. Read this thru to learn how to make the tables. It isn't too hard really. http://www.romhacking.com/docs/general/tables/tabdef.txt |

Ok! A much better but less known hexeditor is Winhex. This might be caused by there being a commercial Winhex too. Anyway, the "Romhacking" version can be found on my website. Try it, it's much better than Translhextion and it works with XP too. |

I don't know why, but I kind of dislike the tool you use. The gui looks somehow homebrew and I've never had any problems with Translhextion in XP.... Anyway this is my point of view. May be that someone else likes Winhex more (like Impala....^^) |

I just use any old hex editor. I find that the text is usually all bunched together, and if your hacking a game that you know well, you shouldnt have too much trouble figuring it all out. I prefer Hex Workshop. Although it isnt free software, you can try it for a month or so.

Is there a Metroid specific text editor out there? I'm not into Hex and tables and stuff so anything idiot proof would be warmly received. Thx!

Editing text in a hex editor is easier than you would think. You just got to make the right table. It's easy to find what digits you got to use for the letters with Nesticle. Then when you have the table made you just got to use the search feature to find the text you want to change. I wish Nesticle wasn't the only emulator powerful enough to get you the right digits for a table. Mainly because it is full screen. It would be better if it was windowed. |

What about if it's a SNES rom and not a NES rom? Would NESticle still give me the correct value for the game?

No, because NESticle is a NES emulator, not a SNES emulator.

I don't suppose one of you could show me an example with screen shots of how to do, could you? I'd really appreciate it!

NESticle can play NES ROMs, not SNES ROMs. There's nothing to give a screen of.

For the record: Nesticle blows. Throw it out and pick up FCEUXD for your NES hacking needs. |

I mean someone to show me how to use one of the programs they recommended like Translextion. Or maybe someone could just show how to make a table atleast? *edited* Ok, nevermind, I finally found a simple program to make tables with. (edited by ShadowSonic on 03-29-05 01:36 AM) |

WinHex can make tables. WinHex is also a very nice hex editor. And it's written by a translator, so it's obviously designed for these sorts of things. I suggest *giving it a try*.

Ok! Also, I made a small doc about the basics of translation recently. It's in Dutch, but it includes step by step screenshots, so it might help you after all. Take a look in the translation section on my website. |

I've been working on my own table file for a hack I'm doing and it's pretty much done (Just need to figure out the coding for altering texxt display speed and color). Sadly, as I'm a Mac user running OS X, there's not much in the way of tools to help me. I've been using HexEditor, any tools that people know of that would help me out, or should I just continue with what I'm doing? (edited by anclunn on 03-29-05 08:46 AM) |

Ok, this is just weird but, what the heck is up with that "Bork Bork Bork!" crap!? Is that a virus or a hacker or does it just randomly appear to change people's messages? And if it's normal, is there a way to turn it off?

ShadowSonic: You wouldn't use Nestice for an SNES rom, you'd use SNESticle. iamhiro: Nesticle the only emulator "powerful enough" to display tile numbers? AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH You need to look at FCEUxd for sure man, you have no clue what's going on. For text editors: FCEUxd has a built in hex editor with .tbl loading support, albeit not the most powerful hex editor for text hacking, but definitely the quickest since changes are in real time and instant. |

I figure I should mention that WindHex32 (as it has been renamed to avoid confusion with the commercial product) can be found at Bongo`'s website, Stealth Translations, in the "My Documents" section. (His website is in dire need of an overhaul...) It comes in two flavors - standard, which is nice and compact, and EX, which is more of a full-screen Translhextion/Hex Workshop-style hex editor. I personally prefer the standard version, which I can move around the screen as I require, position it on top of text files and such when I'm doing insertion formatting and/or reprogramming the games, but other people will undoubtedly prefer the fullscreen style of the EX version. It's a fantastic tool either way, and is much better than Translhextion with its screwy script dump format, faulty search logic, and general slowness. |
