I am thinking about using the barrels from DKC by using the "boost blocks" found in block tool.

One sentence threads suck. I think you should have kept that idea to yourself until you make some actual progress on these barrels. The idea is OK, but you'd have to change the sound the boost blocks make to a boom instead of the coin sound, you'd have to change the barrel blocks' priority so it shows up over Mario, and you'd have to place the graphics correctly so it doesn't look like Mario's walking through the top of the barrel. It would be a lot of work.

In that case, does anyone know the address for the "boom" sound made by thwomps, and how to use the block editor in block tool?

Unless you want mario to shoot straight up in the air, you should stick to the diagonal pipes. I'm not saying you can't be adventurous though; in that case, knock yourself out.

The big problem is that boost blocks don't work quite how you'd expect because of SMW's physics. If you shoot Mario sideways really fast, he doesn't fly off sideways, he plops fast.

Heh heh. I guess that would mean you'd need to rocode the physics engine.

This would need a lot of ASM hacking for just 1 object. And changing this could affect other objects. I've had the idea too, but I never used it...too much work for just an object

Not really. A shooting barrel true to the old DKC games would require too much hacking to be practical, and if you had that know-how you'd be better off doing better things with SMW. Like new powerups.

That's true... I didn't take into consideration the shooting pipes. But still, it would take a lot of work sending it to the right code piece and even more if you wanted the barrels to shoot you any direction but up and right.

It uses a special mode which basically keeps Mario's speed locked for a few seconds. There doesn't seem to be any way to send him off in other directions, and I'm not sure how to specify how long he flies.
