I'm practicing drawing fighting positions and stuff this month.

Lineart:

Half finished CG (gave up on the highlights and shadows, since it's more time consuming with a mouse and I don't have my tablet):

I'd say you're on a roll.
The thick diagonal lines used for extra shading makes it look vintage. I like it!

Looks good! The guy's left foot looks a little weird in the CG, though.

Now I'll demonstrate the making of a short fight scene, starting with simply drafting the idea on paper:

Page 1
Page 2
Page 3

It's hard to follow at first, but we'll fix that in the next step.

Todo:
- Add a setup shot that sets the location and the background
- Add a panel before the last two that shows the blonde guy crashing into the girl.
- Add a panel that shows the scarfed boy's hands inside the jackets of the two men as he grabs their guns.
- Add dialog? Nah.
- Clean up the panel layouts and add backgrounds.
- Use a lot more motion lines to emphasize the speed of the scarfed boy's movements.

EDIT: The next step is to make a rough draft showing the panel layouts and featuring better art. I went ahead and added some dialog plus some hints to a backstory in order to create interest. The first panel should be a forest road under a moonlit sky, but I was too lazy to finish adding detail.

Wow, cool work.

I'm going to agree with the critique on the foot in the linework/CG, it seems a little... flat?

I like the sketches for the fight scene, and the inkwork too. I'm not ambitious enough to try doing any manga with my artwork, so I commend you.

That's because the left leg is in an awkward position for supporting the body, and the left foot is disproportionate to everything else.

Anyway, I added screen tones to the 3rd page to make it look better, but you have to see a black and white print at 600dpi for the full effect.

EDIT: Second and third page:

Wow you have some skill. Are you going to continue to draw after this month ends? I would really like to see you take this hobby and make a little something out of it. I think that you could do that pretty nicely. THe only party I don't like is the chibi effect on page 3 and how the kid was styled off of Naruto. But that is just my opinion.

That kid's been compared to several characters already by different people (including some eternal fighter or something from Suikoden and Naota from FLCL). I just like spiky hair and either big collars or scarfs, along with random humor and visual gags.

Anyway, I'm starting to practice doing completely inked, toned, and ready-to-print comics this month as an exercise. I want to take my skills more seriously, but to do that I need to work hard. I'm going to be practicing every day, trying new things or perfecting current skills, until I can't draw anymore or I find a career that I really like.

Just within a few months I should improve quite a bit, so this summer I'm planning on doing an entry for Tokyopop's next Rising Stars of Manga contest.

Now it looks even better...

Am I the first person to notice the robot-like eye in panel 5, page 3?

No, but you're the first I've heard describe them as "robot-like."

Anyway, I got some other ideas for things I'd like to try out, so I finished drafting the first 14 pages of this one for a friend and called it quits.
