I have a Macintosh, and I was just wondering if there were any emulators out there that will do a decent job of netplaying between Mac and PC. I don't care which system the emulator is for, I'm desperate. =\

I believe there formerly was a Snes9x build for Mac, but afaik they discontinued netplay on the newest version. If you can find an older one which still has netplay working, you might try, although I think there was a reason for netplay being discontinued (not working properly?).

Older versions do work, but Mac SNES9x is incompatible with the PC version.

Incompatible for netplay? Someone who has a mac compiler and enough time might be able to fix that. It can't be much more than a version ID of difference.

Mac incompatible with the PC version? it's just network traffic...

anyways, as far as I know, there aren't that many emulators for Mac so you will probably out of luck in terms of finding one that is already pre-compiled. So, if you really need one of the emulators to work, you'll have to take the source code and compile it yourself... If I had a Mac, I'd probably help you out... But, if you really, really want one, you could try to compile one yourself but it seems more trouble than it is worth if you aren't familiar enough with compiling programs.

There's got to be something that can do it... I'm surprised unless the actual version number conflict is something like x.xx(w) vs. x.xx(m) or something silly like that.

How about Ashley just puts out a bounty for a ZSNES Mac port?

hmm...i do have an old computer lying around the house--maybe I'll put a Mac OS on it... this should be fun; my first experience installing an OS that isn't produced by Microsoft. One question--how is compatibility for old Mac programs on the lastest OS?

I checked the forums for SNES9x last night when we were having trouble getting started and it wouldn't allow for person-to-person play on conflicting platforms. They said the same thing in their MAC OS X Troubleshooting thread. Incompatible cross-plat.

i wonder if it is because of little endian, big endian issues... but then again, if there is netplay support for PC, it doesn't make sense because all network traffic has to be oriented in a certain fashion...

this is one odd problem...very odd problem indeed that doesn't make any sense... people can talk across AIM, they can play starcraft or the sims...why not this?

Not sure on endian format at all but MAC to PC netplay I don't see happen too often...hell I don't really see too many MAC emus, period.

Now if it had something like Kaillera support, then I could see it running, but then that isn't too great a service anyways (and I should know, the one and only time I used it I got text-flood hacked, MAME32 use online).

For now, ZSNES is restricted to the x86 architure. So don't expect a version for the PowerPC architure...

However, is it possible to like. Run a Windows emulator in a Virtual Machine?

It's possible but I don't want to know how slow it would be - running an emulator within an emulator itself. Probably wouldn't be that bad if you had a recent PC though.

if people with 1.3Ghz pentiums M can run OSX through an emulator, I'm sure the Virtual PC emulator can handle ZSNES...

I'm not saying it can't handle running the program, I'm just saying that it might strain lower-end systems.

I tried that option, and my computer is just too slow to emulate and emulator decently.. much less netplay with it.

Er, you realize you can't install Mac OS on a PC...

Because the developers of Starcraft and AIM made Mac versions with the capability to do so.

But it's nothing more than network traffic--i'd understand if there were processor optimizations involved but this is the interpretation of network traffic...

Yes, but they still need to re-write the network-related code for Mac, which apparently hasn't been done.

And using a Mac emulator is cheating.

it isn't a mac emulator, it's an emulator that emulates PowerPC -- after all, people run unix on it
