I've been gone for quite a while and after reading the thread about a rom hacking article being in a magazine, and realizing how little a majority of people don't know anything about rom hacking at all I thought it might be a good idea to start an online rom hacking magizine. The first issue would probly be about the basics of emulating systems. We would have to get members to write up articles and all that, review emulators, etc. So what do you all think? I think it would be a good way to introduce people to emulation and to get more rom hackers since the hobby is becoming more and more rare. EDIT: Damn, I probly should have made this into a poll.... Yes, you aren't the only one to have this idea. It's a good idea, and here's hoping you don't produce another Monthly Hacker-alike.

Anyways, hopefully, you shouldn't be able to find the monthly hacker anywhere. I do have the first issue (and probably any others, if there were any), and having looked over it again, it reeks so much of ass, it's best to forget it ever existed. Or, if you are really curious, type "monthly hacker" TEK into Google, and look in Google's cache. (edited by dan on 03-02-05 11:43 AM) |

dan speaks much truth. If, however, someone takes a more concerted and serious approach to it, i still believe it would be a really awesome thing.

A Rom hacking magazine? Well, sounds like a pretty good idea. I belive that the writers would run out of stuff to write pretty fast, though.

Well, not really. We could have different people do different sections. For example, we have a general rom hacking section that pretty much sums up what happened in the world of rom hacking. Like lets say that new info became available for Yoshi's Island. Then there would be a tiny article stating this and then a link to it would be shown. Then we get down to certain sections. There could be "ASM Hacker Corner" where the latest and newly installed ASM hacks of the month would be stated here to catch people's attention. There could also be a "Super Mario World Hacking" section where the latest SMW hacking info is shown. If a new hack is released, there would be an article on it and such. There could also be a "Hack of the Month" and a "Upcoming Hack of the Month" where the best hack for that month (or before then) is shown and any upcoming screenshots are shown. Then, something that XKeeper came up did would be great. If anyone knows what I am talking about, please post it. For those that don't, I am talking about some fake advertisements (the convo about XK's thing went to this) that can be for an editor or a hack. That would be something cool to sort of spread out if they were small enough. Now, if anyone can get this up and going unlike Monthly Hacker then sign me up! Smallhacker: No, not really. If we start small then go on to bigger stuff and have some teaser screens, then it would be better. |

I'm all for getting this started, if anyone else would like to help just say so and also state what type of section you would like to do. If we can get enough users who would be interested in helping then we should probly organize a chat to discuss a few specifis. Please be serious, if your not willing to help out don't voulenteer. Also don't think you have to be expierienced in rom hacking to help, I think a great deal of the magazine should also be devoted to reviewing hacks and a few people with photoshop expierence would also be useful. EDIT: I forgot to say this earlier, but I think your idea of fake advertisments is an excelent idea. (edited by JaCory on 03-03-05 01:21 AM) |

It would be easier if it came out quarterly instead of monthly. (4 times a year) Does the RH community move fast enough to give an GOOD DECENT explanation of something every month? Not really... In 3 months, there will be about 5 noticable hacks, most(if not all) of which are demos. There are 2-3 new hack ideas released every week or two, so maybe 20-25 in 3 months. A full, complete, GOOD, hack may come out twice a year. New data, really only comes around every 3 months. Bits and pieces in between can be brought together to write a good amount on. This is a great idea for the community, and those who can only check every so often. Just, make sure there are no false promises made. Now one lase question, why would ads be a good thing. Theyre mainly just filler, and nobody is MAKING you stick them in there. |

I agree it should only be a quarterly. If you take a look at the Monthly Hacker for February, you'll know that they don't have enough information for just a month (plus, could have been more in depth). How about one for January, April, July, October (every 4 months or different months instead of those). About the fake ads, if it's actually magazine or newspaper layout (like the first Monthly Hackers were), it allows for a break in reading on a page filled with information. I'd like to see the magazine or newspaper layout back because it feels like more effort was put into it than if it were text or html. (feel does not mean is in this sense ) I hope I know what I'm talking about . *CP is editor of the college publication * |

Ok! As for something I was thinking about. Why not make an "active hack projects" list. This would be some sort of release list without the release dates since those wouldn't make any sense. The idea would be to always have the latest list of hacking projects that are active and in the works. This could easely be updated every quarter by adding all hackers in the list to a maillist. They should confim every quartor that the hack will still be released sometime in the future or is canceled. This could give a view about what's in the works and what's still active. |

That is what I meant JaCory. A little pic of a hack... you know, maybe a small avatar-sized pic or a 150x150 (that could be max) pic that has the hack's name in it and some other decor on it. They would be in .png format for fast loading and it wouldn't be clogged with them... I would be interested in it, but I will have to see what I can do before I give a definite answer... |
