Did I forget to mention... Cardboard Tube?

But seriously, we've got a revolver somewhere. We also have a couple rifles in storage, but they are old and worth money and not to be used.

Appart from that... I've got some plastic nunchaku from a trip to Disney World (they came with big foam padding on them, but that slid right off and have long since been misplaced)... A couple bats (T-Ball, Softball, nothing we intended as weapons when we purchased them, but nobody plays said sports anymore, and we do have them laying in places where they'd be easily grabbed in case of intruder)... And though not a weapon, I've got a large wooden shield from a trip to a medieval fair.

*looks around*

no guns, just about 5-6 knives. One's all rusty b/c I never take care of it. I'd love to give someone tetanus with it. *evil grin* Nah just kidding. The blade is extremely dull too.

I've got a practice chinese styled sword (straight, double edged). It's not even sharp but I could probably still do damage with it. Can't wait till I get a real chinese sword.

Other than material weapons, I do use brute force. If they are'nt carrying a gun or sword, I typically just pummel the living crap outta them, lots of fun. Nowadays any such conflicts are very rare for me but I still practise my moves 3 hours a day.

My neighborhood has crazy people hiding in many different corners who would shoot your brains out just to get a little cash for happygrass. I really do plan on moving out soon (still a bit short for a house) and into a safe suburb home but until then, I'm keeping my guns. You can call me a pussy for having a gun, it's better than being a lifeless meatloaf eating a dirt sandwich; I have a lot to live for. Texas is a bigtime gun state and most of the dirty south strive in San Antonio.

For the most part, I consider myself "liberal". One exception is regarding gun rights, with which I am definetely more aligned with Republicans (our conservatives) than Democrats (our liberals).

See, I have this view where guns aren't the subject of legislation, but doing bad things with them is. Baseball bats aren't illegal; kitchen knives aren't illegal; bottles, and breaking said bottles, aren't illegal... yet you can do considerable harm to others with those things, and that is what is illegal (as well it should be). So I believe it should be with guns; and, for the most part, that's how it is with guns here in the United States.

Also note that it is legal to use harmful or even deadly force in self-defense. If someone's trying to kill you, and in the course of defending yourself you have to harm or kill him/her, then for the most part you're in the clear (the situation will be investigated by police, of course, as well it should be). Here, if you attack someone with a baseball bat in self-defense, you're in the clear; if you attack someone with a kitchen knife in self-defense, you're in the clear; and if you shoot someone with a gun in self-defense, you're in the clear. The only differences are the tools used to do it.

Yeah, but why shouldn't there be restrictions to cut down on how they're they're used? It certainly cuts down in deaths, no doubt about that. I assure you, more accidents are caused with guns in households than people killing burglars, or others trying to cause them harm.

I don't have any guns, and to tell the truth I'm quite glad that neither I nor my neigbours and everybody else has the damned things too.

I have kitchen knives. I have a rolling pin. I have things like that. But I have no "weapons" per se, I just have items that could be used as weapons.

That's what the safety's for. If one's not smart enough to use it, they don't have any business buying a gun. Any time the baby's at my house I lock the guns up in an old metal tool box and hide it. Once I move I'll sell them.

CJ, no one's dumb enough to shoot themself on purpose. But sometimes they're used by other family members when they're mad or intoxicated.

My point still stands; more innocent people are hurt from guns in households used for 'self defense' than those who should be injured.

Suicide isn't exactly the brightest thing in the world (and yes, I at one time was teetering in that direction. Life has improved dramatically since).

Weapons....

Yes, there's a bend. Yes, I can remove the tip and sharpen the end.

And these days I also have a "rigid parry" (basically, a spiffy stick used to bat away enemy swords...remember, sharpened steel does not cut like a lightsabre). Guns though...I'm better off throwing one.

An xbox. You drop it on someone coming up my stairs, it will hurt... A LOT!
Some controllers to use as flails.

Uh lesee... There's a boomerang from when my grandma went to Australia... Some kitchen knives... A computer power supply, that's kinda heavy to hit someone in the head with... A soldering iron I could poke your eyes or burn you with... Oh and of course a psychotic cat. I used to carry an exacto knife with me for defense, thankfully I never had to use it for anything besides scaring away a few dimwits. (Which really shouldn't be illegal. )

The issue here is proper usage. You can hurt someone with just about anything, but that's usually not their intended usage. Knives are meant to cut food, not people. Baseball bats are used to play baseball. Bottles are supposed to contain liquids. What use is a gun besides shooting someone? (And don't say self defense either... That defense never gets you anywhere. )

Yeah, there are LOTS of things that can hurt people that aren't meant to...

I frequently threaten to injure people with my hard cover copy of The Lord of the Rings.

Most of my dangerous stuff is in my kitchen. Knives, rolling pins, kettles, (boiling water can be used as a weapon, a really fucken' nasty one at that), etc.

Aussie weapons -- I don't have a boomerang... I had a plastic one as a kid. I could even get it to come.. sort of... back.

Which I'm sure will be a great consolance to anyone who's been killed or injured with any of those things. The intent of the designer is all well and good, but what actually matters is the intent of the person using it.

And apparently surgical knives don't count as knives, or hunting knives which are designed to cut living (or very recently living) things (unless you mean to imply humans aren't living things...?), or, for that matter, Swords.

That's a very dangerous conception of guns. You sound like precisely the sort of person guns should be kept far away from.
To answer your question: how about hunting, for starters? Some people and families out in the country can fully or partially live off hunting.

Because you say so, therefore it is so? You're supposed to offer reasons to, well, defend your position.

I'm not going to stick words in his mouth, but it sounds to me like HH meant "shooting someTHING", which this without question would qualify for. There's bad and good aspects of shooting something, but yeah, it can qualify as much as a tool as a murder weapon.

Like HyperHacker said, you can hurt someone with just about anything. Fancy getting a bookshelf over you? No, didn't think so. Should bookshelfs carry a warning? "Danger. Might hurt a bit if this lands on you." There has to be some sort of categorization. I consider weapons to be objects whose prime functionality consists of degrading something physically - in other words I consider a wrecking ball a weapon, which might not make my opinion the public opinion, but I'm pragmatic when it comes to this. And I agree that the bad uses of these objects should be what's illegal - not the objects themselves. But I also think that the penalty for using those wrongly should be a bit higher than they are today, and vary with the ability for the weapon in question to be misused and/or cause damage.

No weapons per se that I'd use, but I guess these all count...

-Knives
-Hammer
-Sledgehammer
-Kendo Stick
-Pizza slicer
-Boomerang
-Size 14 hiking boots
-Cheese grater
-Rubbish bin
-Scolding water (if your assailant waits for you to boil the kettle)
-Bread bin
-Spare PC monitor
-Hardback of Ultimate Formula One Encycolpedia
-Garfield teddy bears (all 26... you'd die of suffocation if they fell on you)
-BB gun
-Dustbin lid
-DVD collection (the whole shelf in general)

See, anything could be construed as a weapon. More imaginative the better.

Well if you're going to be a wise guy, I meant knives that people generally have around the house. Not a lot of people I know keep surgical knives or swords around.

Like you're going to use an assault rifle for hunting. There are hunting guns, and then there are many, many others that don't fit the category.
