I would say for everyone to sit back and watch all the fanboys commit suicide in desperate horror, but it goes without saying, really.

On a similar note...

(IZZAFACT!!!: Square moved over to Sony because they didn't want to do games for the N64. They sent their N64 dev-kits back to Nintendo and did FF7.)

But then, the idea of a company physically kidnapping a guy from Nintendo's house is amusing to me....

That's not true that they didn't necessarily want to do anything for the N64. The Final Fantasy VII demos and stuff were on the way for it, but it was the fact that they just didn't want to do anything with NINTENDO that made them go to Sony.

Nintendo wasn't the easiest company to work with in those days. They've always made great games but they've gone through phases of being pains in the ass to some companies.

Although if anyone immediately thinks of Rare, I think they were right to let them go. Nintendo is generally more buddy-buddy with companies these days. Still very secretive about their own stuff, but that's part of their success.

The problem is that this creator of Final Fantasy is pretty.. Unknown. He kinda reminds me of a John Romero figure, who went on to create kinda crappy games when he left ID Software. Ok, so he's probably more vital than that guy, but he's no Shigeru, and nobody really ever could be. The difference it will make is minimal, he might make a good, innovative RPG series and that would be nice to have. But it's the Final Fantasy and Square names that people care about most.

Search me, all I remember is a quote from a really old SNES magazine about Square saying they had sent their N64 kits back to the N.

They did, but that was cos they were cheesed off at Nintendo, so. They definitely did some work with them beforehand. Didn't look bad for the time, either.

Kario, you said Sony 'stole' Final Fantasy. That's what people are talking about.

Exactly. So how did they "steal" him? (For the others argueing)

But yes, if you've looked around before, there are N64 images of a "3D FFVI" that Square messed around with, before they decided to go with Sony.

But, besides that ... I don't really care too much. Honsetly right now, I'm looking more forward to the PS3 and "Revolution". But this was a smart move by Microsoft, since it's clearly been seen, they can't make RPG's worth crap.

And this doesn't surprise me, I heard rumors that Square was going to develop games for the next Xbox system, this is almost the same concept.

And it's not like developers are even that exclusive these days.
RE4? You can expect to see that for the PS2 in a couple of months.

...Fyxe.

The N64 was impossible to program for and Square thought that A) it was a bad system to work for that could harm them and B) Nintendo's poorly thought out business practises and management were just too much for them. At that time Sony was the bright new comer without aggressive purchase policies. See how that has changed, eh?

Yes'm.
Nintendo troubles also caused us to not get "FF2j, FF3j, and FF5j" back in the day.

Clearly the N64 wasn't *impossible* to program for at all. Not easy but you're exaggerating. I think if I remember reports at the time, Square's main problem was with the whole cartridge system. They wanted to use Cds that hold more data and allow for FMVs and suchforth. That was what was said at the time, anyway.

And yes, I KNOW Nintendo had poor business practices back then, I said that they were a difficult lot to work with in those days.

Xeogred, the reason we didn't get those games is down to Nintendo of AMERICA, not Nintendo of Japan or Square not wanting to release them, I believe. Nintendo of Japan didn't censor the games and released all of them. Obviously. Blame NoA for that (at least for the censoring, although that might be more down to the ESBA). And maybe Square USA.

And sometimes a game dosen't get released in US becuse of deemed offensive, but still released in Europa. A certain NES game with a few relgious ingridents is a such example. I forgot it's name, but it have a Trophy in the japanse version of SSBM.

CD would allow better sound, N64 had to use heavy compressions for it's sounds. While PS could be crystal clear, thought the PS was lacking at almost everything compared to the N64. Expect for space. 650 megabytes instead of like... 30 megabyte (some of the biggest N64 are around that, at least in my collecion...) or so.

I'm sure the story here would have been different if Nintendo were to simply go with CD's, over cartridges "again".

I remember one thing I hated, was that brand new N64 games went about for $70 because the cartridges alone were like $5 to produce, compared to the what, 5-20 cents to make a CD?

But yeah, I think this topic has gotten a little too off-topic guys.

Sorry, I contributed.

Valshun said that 'i find it funay when u talk about how he was st0lz', and Kario was referring how FF was 'stolen', not him.

Now, I have to say, I don't think Hironobu Sakaguchi could really do that much if he leaves. As NSNick pointed out, some people can affect the gaming market, I just don't really think it could be him.

*goes past all the "he said this/said that" arguments*

The N64 was a bad system to develop games on and everyone knew it. I'm pretty certain Nintendo just sent the kits out one day and told everyone to have fun exploring them. And I'm sure they did.

A *lot* more data could go on a PSX CD than a N64 cart, and the CD's were cheaper to produce as well. Cartridges are *not* cheap.
