I have a suggestion for the next board version. We already have the block layout for individual users, so maby a block post for individual users would be good? What Im thinking, is it wont completly make the post not appear, it will just insert a line of text that says: "Post by *usersname* has been blocked, Click here to show this post" Then if you want to see the post, click the link and it will temperarly unblock that post for viewing, but it will be blocked again when the page is closed, or a new page is opened. This may be hard work to code, and im sure not MANY people would use it, but I would think it may cut down on flames and spam. If you dont perticularly like a users posts......they can be blocked. Just a thought, tell me what you think. |

This idea is stupid. If you have a problem with a user, bring it up with the user and/or staff.

I don't think that's a great idea. Sometimes... occasionally... someone sees a good post by someone they don't like, possibly improving their opinion of that person. In any case, it doesn't help discussion if people hold grudges of silence against each other. Of course, people who are dead-set on ignoring others can (and do) just skip over their posts..

How many would find that useful? I only find block on IM clients useful. On boards you can just get that user banned/warned if he annoys you in a way. I honestly wonder, i'm the only one who can stand even litirally stupid users or users that tries to annoy me? Besides, Zem said the biggest reason why not to implent that. People change, and often to the better. Most of the cases at least. |

i'm against this idea--if you don't like the way the person's post, just skip it and move on to the next one. It isn't that hard to do to scroll down or up to have the post not be in sight...

I have a built-in option for this. I turn the mouse wheel a few times, and bam, the post is gone off the top of the screen! (Yeah, I did suggest that once, but I was being sarcastic. ) |

that feature seems to defeat or undermine the entire purpose of the message board in the first place, which is a clear and organized fashion of textual communication. Removing users posts would only confuse things IMO.

Originally posted by GavinWell, if someone blocked another's posts, they should understand that doing so might cause them to lose context when the blocked users post something. If that context is important, then as per Keikonium's suggestion, they could click the "show this post" link, thereby regaining that context. That said, ideally, such a feature ought not be necessary since people should be able to keep their emotions in check, or deal with the situation rationally. I certainly agree with that; initially I was in support of the feature, but this argument makes me reconsider my position. Though, it should be obvious that not everyone can keep a cool head. If, for example, someone is prone to flaming someone else, they can put that person on their "ignore list", which can help them to avoid situations in which they know they're apt to act rashly. |

i just think it adds an entirely unecessary layer to the communication process. invariably there will be posts whose sole context is based on a "hidden" user's posts, indirectly blocking off the understanding of not just a single user's message but multiple users. Blocking a layout worked because it had no real relevance to the message at hand, where this feature would modify the messages meaning by removing context. Apparently it all comes down to whether they feel so strongly as to substitute not viewing a particular user's message that they would rather render potentially many threads unreadable. And unless you count Knuck, i don't think it would be the case. (edited by Gavin on 02-27-05 01:57 PM) |

I had this idea too, for another board, but it just wouldn't be practical. It would only be applied to a handful of users ever, and most of them would be in the line for bannanation anyways |

Gavin: e-fucking-xactly. You put into words what I was thinking. Normally I hate it when someone suggests a feature and someone else says "why do that? it's a waste of time and you can already do blah blah blah" but this one is definitely an unneeded and possibly harmful feature.

That also doesn't make sense: If a regular user quotes an ignored user on my list, I'll see that post anyway. Also mods and admins must not be able to be blocked. Think about a warning post by a mod or admin posts blocked by the specified user. Since you wont't be able to read that, you'll be banned later for continuing posting the same way. Thus, I'm against that idea. |
