Any of you ever play with the Wayback Machine? It's an archive of the web of sorts, lets you have a look at pages that are now long gone.

Like baby Google, back in 1998 when it was just this...
And more baby Google, a few months later in 1998
Google in 1999

Yahoo amuses me too. From this in 1996 to the current ad infested monster it is now!!

What can you find in the Wayback Machine ?

I use that all the time, usually to get informationt hat was removed from websites and such. It's pretty useful.

And the first Google page is funny, it's amazing that the behemoth it is now started from that..

Holy shit, I actually remember Yahoo looking like that back in the day.

Gamefaqs looked like this at a certain point, and it was unknown...

Aftonbladet, a swedish newssite... the most wellknown site in Sweden used to look like this. Look at the IE 3.0 ad. XDDD

Seems like they didn't start archiving stuff until 1996 or something, hmm. And notice that there is a general change of site layouts over the time, which is quite intresting.

I use wayback machine fairly often, usually for finding old art. I have succefully gotten art from artists that had their site closed down since years. Most of the time the site is on wayback machine, althought a picture or two is missing sometimes...

I sometimes look up some old boards that I used to post at...sadly, only a few pages remain of Miraged Discussion or of the Challenge Games Ikonboard, the first board I ever posted at...

God, that first Google logo... *shudders* Talk about tacky, but at least the streamlined version that resulted is much more pleasing to the eye.

I've played with it sometimes. It's a hell of a historical resource and it's the only way to get to some info (and sometimes even downloads) on defunct sites.

Heh, and I thought gamefaqs looked bad now after their recent (within the past year) update.

Wow, Google looked like a boring test page. I put in 'toast' and it showed a bunch of CSS.

LOL -- well, that is how you get an internet archive, you have automated programs that just look for links and stuff.

The net has come a long way since it's introduction to the public domain back in the early 90s.

If that was possible... then archive.org would have been perfect.

Alot of sites using scripts and such is working little odd in archive.org

And magic. As long as we're talking the Wayback Machine, I found a Firefox extension that can open the Wayback archived pages for the page you're on currently.

After one minute, i'm wondering why I hadn't installed it earlier.

I use the waybackmachine as soon a link is broken on a messageboard. And in old threads, you do find alot of broken links...

I'm reminded of what Steve Jobs once said about online greeting cards: "These guys spared no expenses, they even used multiple colors! Honestly, these things makes me slightly embarassed to be human."
