Well, Retro Gamer #13 (or "vol. 2, issue 1", as the cover says) just arrived in the mail, and what do I find but a 5 page article on ROM hacking. Okay, it doesn't go very in-depth, and the only hacking utility they comment on is NESticle, but still...

It also featured a list of the so-called "Best ROM hacks", which appearantly is:

Super Mario Remix II
Girls' Night Out
Metroid Remix
Legend of Zelda: Curse from the Outskirts
Mario Kart Hyper Battle
And, yes.. Strange Mario World

Hmm, I think I'll have to go buy that, even though it sounds like a truly terrible article.

Wow they are HORRIBLY behind the times if they consider those the best ROM Hacks of all time. No offense to their respective creators, but stuff like Zelda Challenge, Demo World, and DXO deserve to be on that list. Maybe you can get us a scan of the article?

I refuse to accept Nesticle as a "hacking tool".

Sorry, I don't have a scanner, but I'll type up the part of the article that talks about how to hack.

Ahem:

"A full blown how-to is beyond the scope of this feature, but here's a simple introduction to hacking a NES game. To get started, you'll need some software. Pick a game you want to work with (make sure you've gt the original, ahem), then go online and find a working ROM, along with an emulator to play it.
Many modern emulators, such as NESticle, already include hacking tools. For example, pause the playback of a ROM in NESticle and press F4 to View Palette. This'll let you play with the game's colours. Want to turn Mario green and pretend he's from space? This is one way to do it.
With a bit of work, you can find a variety of programs online that can help you mess around with ROMs. In order to design entirely new levels, you'll need a hex editor such as Hex Workshop, which will translate a ROM's binary files from unusable and unreadable text to hackable hex code. This is the best way of altering a game's graphics, but it tends to require a great deal of double-checking and reloading.
Here's a simple example of how to change some text. Let's say we're playing Super Mario Bros and we want to rewrite the text on the title screen. Launch the ROM in NESticle, and when the title comes up, pause the emulation. Press F2 to check the game's tiles, and write down each letter's hex files. Now, open the ROM in your hex editor and change the files as you see fit.The ROM won't let you write anything longer than the original statement, but that gives you a bit of leeway.
Obviously, this isn't a process for the faint of heart or the easily bored. You can pull off relatively simple hacks in a surprisingly short amount of time, especially with the right emualtion software, but the more complicated you intend to get, the more intesive this will become. Some of the larger mods have been years in the making.
For more specific details and tutorials, take a look at www.romhacking.com/docs/gendocs.php and www.jeffsromhack.com/toolbox/index.htm. Many of the more popular hacks, meanwhile, can be downloaded at Zophar's Domain (www.zophar.net/hacks) or Aeon Genesis Translation Projects (http://agtp.romhack.net)"

Before this part, there was an introduction, as well as a "what is a ROM hack" part. The "How to hack"-part was then followed by a list of the 6 best ROM hacks, with pictures and descriptions, and descriptions of 6 "Unofficial NES ports" ("Street Fighter 2", "Super Donkey Kong 2", "Family Kid" (Sonic the Hedgehog port), the graphic hacks "Super Mario World 9" and "Wario Land 2", as well as SNES hack "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" (wtf? This was supposed to be about NES games. They don't outright tell you it's a SNES game either ("This 24mb cart..."), and they don't mention it's a graphic hack of Speedy Gonzales at all.)
All this is follow by an interview with Jeff Kulczyki of www.jeffsromhack.com.

Somewhat uncalled for, given the only edition I have (from a while ago, like mabye 6months or so) mentions Mario Adventure in a reader letter.

Well, I suppose they're right if you're looking for retro rom hacking

They sound just as misinformed as they do in past "Emulation" articles.

By the way, was it Strange Mario World that was up for sale on Ebay once?

NESticle; the most modern NES emulator ever! :o

What terrible information is this? Hard to imagine the editors actually believe what they wrote. Yes, I would have to say it's a very bad article.

Not to mention that the tiles shown in SMB1 are repeated, flipped, and some other stuff. O.o

Also, they don't mention the many other programs developed to help in hacking.

Why couldn't they have picked one of my good hacks to be in the list of "Best hacks ever?" You should definately go to a local library and scan that so I can check out my stuff in a published article, despite the fact that this article lives way in the past... I mean seriously NESticle hacking?

Sorry, my vacation starts tomorrow, and I won't have internet access until Sunday night, so I won't be able to get anything scanned until next week. But hey, I can't be the only person on the board who read Retro Gamer, can I? I know it's a british magazine, but still.

Anyway, here's what it said about your hack (Curse from the Outskirts, right?)

"This game is from pretty much the same genre as Super Mario Remix II, only backwards. Instead of turning a classic RPG into a Mario game, it turns the original Super Mario Brothers into a demented side-scrolling Zelda game! All sorts of Zelda enemies, new gameplay, and maps nothing like the original SMB make this one a real treat. It's super-challenging too, making this a real test for expert gamers."

EDIT: Oh, btw, Live Publishing has a forum where you can comment on each individual issue. For those who want to express their opinion on this article, this is where you do it.

I feel somewhat offended that Girls Night Out was heralded as one of the "greatest ROM hacks" by these imbeciles. SMB3C, for example, was around a long time before GNO was, yet somehow it is not worthy of mention.

If this article was written anytime in the last three or four years, then the authors are seriously lacking a clue and are borderline trolling.

Well, you have to understand that the writers don't live in rom hacking central like we do. To them, the mere thought of graphic hacking NES games is like awe and wonder. If they got a peak at how DahrkDaiz has utterly molested SMB3, well I think DD would be getting more attention that he actually wants.

Sometimes it's a good thing that we don't get all the attention. Too much attention isn't good, especially in the outside world.

Actually thier biggest source was a guy that hacks arcade games, and Zophar's Domain. You can tell just based off the hacks on thier list. That's why when they picked one of mine they picked the oldest one, because it's the only hack on Zophar's.
