After been working on Zelda Gates of Time for quite some time I decided to show some progress at long last. After cancelling Gates of Darkness and started working on other "unrealisable" sides projects such as Lyra Islands and my Minish Cap convertion for Zelda 3, I decided on releasing an hack which could be done for good..

The game consists of two ages. You start in the present, then later you visit the past.

- "LIGHT WORLD" is now the "PRESENT TIME"
- "DARK WORLD" is now the "ANCIENT TIME"

Story isn't fully complete yet...
------------------------------

DUNGEONS STATUS (6.7/11 ~60%):

Intro Sequence - Finished (Some bugs need to be fixed)

Pendant 1 - Finished
Pendant 2 - Finished
Pendant 3 - Finished (Some bugs need to be fixed)

Crystal 1 - Finished
Crystal 2 - Started (Not finished)
Crystal 3 - Finished (Not play tested)
Crystal 4 - Finished (Not play tested)
Crystal 5 - Not started
Crystal 6 - Not started
Crystal 7 - Not started

Houses - Finished
Caverns - Not started
----

OVERWORLDS STATUS (100%):

Present Time - Finished
Ancient Time - Finished
------------------------------

EVERYTHING ELSE:

Music will stay the same.
World Maps: 100%
Monologue: ~ 25%
Palettes: Almost everything changed accordingly.
Dungeons Maps: not started
Dungeon Properties: 50%
Menu Screens: 75%
3D Objects: 100%
Link's Graphics: 100%
ASM Hacks: None planned yet.
Various HEX Fixes.
------------------------------

SOME SCREENS:

Not trying to ruin the game for some, this time I decided to not show 80+ screens.

The following screens are subject to differ/change when the final version be released. (Especially the title screen which is far from complete)

------------------------------

As far as things go, the release could be this summer if I keep up the same pace or next winter in the worst case scenario.

I got to be honest, I love those screenshots.

I know it's not exactly what you were thinking, but perhaps instead of waiting for one gigantic release during the summer, release what you have as a beta so that people can comment on it. What you have so far looks awesome, and I would think some feedback might be a good incentive to finish it.

Whatver you do, I can't wait. We need more quality Zelda 3 hacks that are finished, but also fun to play.

This is looking quite nice It's too bad that you cancelled Gates of Darkness, but as long as you're working on another hack, it's not as bad.

I don't hack Zelda 3, so I can't really view those screenshots with a critical eye type thing, but there's still nothing I can see that's wrong in any of them. I wonder about the bottom left one, as it's a dark room, but I may be just getting overly suspicious there

Well, actually there's one thing that looks sort of odd, in the second screenshot down in the left column. The staircase in the upper right corner of the screen, with the big rock below them looks sort of weird. I'd say it's because the left and right hand sides basically just cut off, which makes you think you'd be able to jump off either of them

Aside from that though, this is looking quite nice so far

I'll consider it. If I'm really having problems during the hacking process I might just take a break while you guys test the first part of the game and search for bugs. Sometimes I can stop working on the hack for weeks before working on it again.

Thanks for pointing that out. I wouldn't simply notice it myself, that's why feedback can be required sometimes when doing an hack. Especially when the hacking process takes large amounts of time.

I agree. The numbers are bad for a Zelda game, but good for some technological game... maybe...

Other than that stupid complaint, I think it is great work. Really nice and good work with the dungeons (which I still can't make...). Keep it up and hope to see a demo of it soon.

I like what I see.

About the number thing, if you can use more than one color, you could try the Zelda 2 type font (like name input).

I see the soldiers actually have faces now and the magic meter doesn't have the blank part at the top and bottom anymore. Is is just me, or does the tree look a little bit different than the original? I'm not sure, but if it was only a pallet change (which it may not even be that), I'm liking it.

Alright, for the interface font (the numbers actually), I'll try to find a proper one for the style.

As for the trees Chill Penguin you saw right since that's a little something I've been playing with most overworlds GFX sets, see:

By combining both parts of the tree (of each world), it adds some unique creativity to the hack while keeping the same nostalgy of the original game (since the graphics aren't from other games, just the same but "remixed" if I could say).

Same for the soldiers face, I took them from the credits where you see the good king back in health..

Looking good. The "new" trees are great and all I have to complain about is the numbers, they don't look bad or anything, they just don't fit in a Zelda game, but I see that it's alread mentioned (spellcheck?) so...
Things like this makes me wish I knew how to hack Zelda...

Looks great! Zelda 3 is one of the best games ever, I'll definitely play this hack. I still can't believe you do this all by yourself, I find Zelda 3 way too hard to hack. Keep it up.

I always liked the single-color 8x8 handwritten numerals in Castlevania 2, with the exception of the 5 and 7, and have based the numbers in my new Baseball Stars 2 hack on them. In any case, handwriting-like numbers look good in a Zelda game. Maybe make the 7 with a line in it.

That's one thing that bothered me about Zelda 3; the number 7 looks bizarre. This must be rectified!

The first grass changes I've tried were too much pixelated IMO, see:

Later, I tried a less pixelated grass but this time I had transparency errors:

It sure looks great, but actually when playing the game, and when you go below the forest you see various little bugs there and there. The main problem with the game is that only the original green color used for the grass is transparent. So when using multiple green clors, Link will only be viewable under the original green one. I'm still figuring a way around this. That's why I decided to keep the same grass for now..

I'm not too sure if that's the font you're talking about Heian-794 since I never played the Castlevania series, but I'm sure it would probably fit the game better then the current one.

Uchiha, those are them! They look like they would fit fine in a Zelda game. Just move the bar on the 5 up one pixel and make the upper left hook on the 7 a bit smaller, and you've got the font I'm working on now. Stick some shadows on those and they're perfect!

Alright, thanks for confirming. Consider it done. The next screens I'll post will have that font.

Yeah I hope so too.. Well Omega's hack (Dark Prophecy) is probably going to be the first complete hack to be release which will be released in a few months (according to their progress thread). I hope to play their hack soon.. since as you state theirs not much Z3 hacks around. People tend to stay away from Hyrule Magic.. too many troubles, limitations and so on.
