There's quite a few sources and two pages on Wikimedia itself, I'll just link to those:
Wikinews: Google offers to help Wikipedia
Wikimedia Meta-Wiki: Google hosting

To me, this sounds like a pretty good idea. As long as Wikimedia does not give up their rights to the sites, it all sounds good. Google's servers are big and fast and support way more traffic than the current Wikimedia servers. Heh... there's going to be a Wikipedia search on Google, too!

The thing that strikes me, though, is that Google could easily (and legally) download the database and make a mirror anyway without consent. I guess it may be so that Google's copy won't be mistaken as the real thing. (edit: they pratically do mirror it anyway with the cache system :p)

edit: it seems like they're only getting Wikipedia.... still a big move.

Blech...don't EVER compare Google to Microsoft. They haven't done anything evil and/or stupid, and they have far higher standards.

If you consider politics, you can't ever compare the two. If you consider their status in their respective markets, well, they are the same (which was where I was coming from)

He is talking marketing wise, infact neither IE or DOS was made from Microsoft from the start. Besides a monopoly never is good for the consuments...

I can see some commerical intrest from Google's side, but then Wikipedia have been so slow to surf on sometimes. And as long they don't "abuse" their power too much about Wikipedia... censor is the last thing I want on the Wiki.

Let's take this into a bigger perspective. Google's reason for existance - according to themselves - is to "help organize the collected body of information in the world". Noone can deny that Wikipedia is -the- biggest freely available single body of information on the internet - legitimate or not. Thus, it's partly in Google's interest to help them stay online - the other major bodies of information are mostly supported by advertising or subscriptions and will do fine.

Thus they put forward a proposal - "Google Inc. have made a proposal to host some of the content of the Wikimedia projects." - to help host Wikimedia's stuff. Not host it all. Just help out. And you have to understand that even if they -did- host all of it, it's still licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. In order to fiddle with the contents, they'd have to a) don't care about the license and fiddle with it anyway, and risk being taken to task in court or b) lift the license, and be forced to delete everything, since everything was written under the assumption that it'd be available under the FDL, and it would therefore not be fair game to make it available under any other license.

So. The content stays, and if the deal happens, Google will host *part of* Wikimedia's stuff, which may or may not include any of Wikipedia, Wikiquote, Wikisource, etc.

Well, personally I think it will benefit both parties. Wikipedia will get some hosting, which is good, cause as already stated they can be a little slow sometimes. And Google get to continue in their goal of making information on the internet easily available....

Oh, and yeah, I'm not fond of people making comparisons between Google and Microsoft either. Microsoft don't have a "do no evil" rule, for starters....

Well... this could be seen as an attack toward MSN. There's the MSN Encarta, which MSN Search logically goes through.

I definitely see no arguement as to why not.

Like most said, it'll seem to definitely benefit both sides. Google is popular, and is giving us all these great features (gmail) and new creative ideas. (anyone seen the new Google Beta search? You put in something, and whatever letter you start off with, Google shows possible search results by letter, name, etc in the bottom in a scroll bar, and it works very nicely.)

I'm sure this will stir up Micrsoft, who's already in a "war" agains't Google.

Wikipedia can get more benefit than just hosting from this: if it's made more prominent through the Google affiliation (if Google sends more people there, for example) it only helps out, due to how Wikipedia functions...

Yep, the OS we're forced to use to ROM hack because of their giant monopolization.

Wikipedia seems to function great as it is. Then again, nothing Google's done has ever, ever been bad. I see great things at the end of this tunnel.

I actually think it is quite a good idea. It will benifit both google and Wikimedia in my opinion, seeing as Google is a much larger (and above all) faster surver.

surver, heh.

Yes, that's another factor. Wikipedia craps out on me, occasionally, and I have to wait like thirty seconds to use it.

Yeah, survers are the newest generation of severs. We can make them faster and stronger than ever.

That's not entirely true... Lunar Magic works in Wine. That's good enough for me. And there's a free IPS program that works on any operating system with a C compiler.

Without starting an argument...

Wine is still an implimentation of the Windows API.
