Because you are normal. Like me. Stuff just doesn't randomly download.

The mind boggles.

Technially, by downloading anything, a connection is made. But with most routers, you redirect ports to certain computers. Meaning if you want to use port 80 (HTTP sites), then you open that. If you want to use AIM (port 5132, I think), you open that. Just don't open all of them (especially 135, the Messenger port); just the ones you need.

Also, if you don't use Internet Explorer, you can't get viruses by simply loading a page. You can get viruses with any browser, though, by downloading executables or things.

you don't have to enable a firewall... that's a side effect of NAT, nobody can connec tto your computer....

if you turn on the firewall it's just going to be a pain in the ass, and you will have to be opening ports all the time for outbound traffic

I uninstalled norton personal firewall on monday, now without a firewall how will I know I won't get hacked again and be back to putting up a firewall again ? also the guy from netgear told me that there is a firewall on the router and I need to enable encryption on it. I tried 40/64 bit encryption that turn off my netgear adapter every 4 to 8 minutes as well as 128 bit encryption and I still get a connection problem
so can anyone tell me how to trully enable the routers firewall without me getting the same problem that I have had for almost a week ?

I believe you mean viruses (virus isn't a latin word).

So, even if you've opened a router port, a direct connection isn't possible?

the netgear guy is right.... uninstall norton personal firewall... it is NOT NEEDED...

if you are behind a router, it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to establish a connection to your computer....

if you download illegal copies of software and stuipd shit like Kazaa.. then yes you could potentially get virii, but that's common sense and a given....

get a recent virus scanner, keep it up to date.... and uninstall norton personall firewall

simple...

You said the red screen is from Norton not handling a bunch of viruses at once.

Windows XP's crash screen is blue. Though you have to disable automatic reboot to see it, which has been default since NT 4.

You could always use the Firewall that does come with XP. For many people it is sufficient enough. If you don't want to use that, then yeah, a third-party firewall software is your next option, either that or buy a new router (preferably linksys)

However, I think it is probably in your best interest redo the computer and reinstall your operating system and start with a fresh copy of the OS.

First of all: How in the hell are you getting viruses and spyware every hour? Do you use Kazaa?

Hey, I'm having some major problems with my network adapter and Norton personal firewall. Last week everything was working just without a problem up until monday morning I find out that my web browser is acting sluggish and slow and it won't load any webpages. after I had gotten home from school I called netgear and they told me that I need to turn off norton personal firewall 2003 and uninstall it.... I told the technician that the last time I turn my firewall off and let the computer run for about an hour I got one internet worm, a virus and a Trojan horse and since I had did this problem I got the RED screen of death from Norton antivirus because NAV2003 couldn't handle all three problems at once and the computer crashed and I had to do a fresh clean install of XP.
So he told me to enable 40 to 64 bit encryption on my computer and to use the routers firewall to protect me from internet intrusion....so I did what he said and now have another problem everytime I connect to the internet it will stay on for about 15 to 20 minutes and it will cut off the adapter on my computer for about 4 to 8 minutes and reconnect. so I went into my routers configuration and turn off the encryption and now my computer can access the net with cutting off but there's a catch to it if I want to use the net and download some stuff I need to disable the firewall while using the net.
is there a firewall I can use to protect me while I'm on the net ?
I'm thinking about buying Norton Internet security 2005 and see if it will help or do better than its older version.

Can anyone help me with this problem ?
