There are restrictions in the GPL that don't exist in BSD. Likewise, the MIT doesn't restrict you as much as BSD.
I prefer GPL because it saves you from people forking off your product then changing the license. |

Hmm...well, it is used by a lot of people so it is effective and it works. But I find it more complicated than BSD but GPL offers better protections than BSD. So, it is a trade off in the end. |

On the contrary, the GNU/FSF version of free does not mean price. Also, the GNU/FSF encourages you to sell free software for a profit.
edit: on the same topic. Proprietary software cannot be licensed under the GPL. |

GPL is hairy in the sense that well--you aren't supposed to make money and your stuff needs to be open sourced, I think or something like that. So, companies that make money off of GPL stuff are walking a fine line...but I dunno, they have the resources to influence the line so yeah. |

How in the world is it a "hairy" topic? It's plain and simple. And so far, all license violations have been acknowleged and punished on appropriately in the courts (when they get taken there, of course).
Besides, SuSE is just a waste of resources (in my opinion) not suited for servers anyway. |

okay, there are linux version that do cost money but it seems that SuSE is more used for server side stuff...which is what Novell offering... but anyways, GPL is hairy topic so I don't want to get into that.... |

The kernel itself is always free and that cannot change, yes.
However, the distribution may still contain proprietary software and such (which automatically is not GPL-free). And that software may just be what is requiring money.
SuSE Pro is another distribution which costs money and is illegal to download (pirate). |

Um, you can get a community version for free, I think. If you visit what looks to be the official website (well it's the first link in Google ), the downloads section has a link to various FTPs with ISOs on them. You just have to pretend to be a member of their club or something. |
