Doesn't mean ESPN won't air the NHL next season. They could still negotiate with them and pay *less* than $60m for the deal - in other words, they might be banking on the league being so desperate that they'll accept something like $40-45m.

Spike TV might be interested in the package, they were outbid by NBC last year.

As for the NBA, they're spiraling that way rather quickly, it seems... last-minute meeting cancellations aren't good.

Well, they took a huge hit today, and not because of actions from the PA or the owners. ESPN has declined the 2005-2006 option on their broadcasting. Basically, they only have NBC now as the major market. (ABC is part of ESPN, and I would imagine that's included in the option.)

Full story. The NHL also has contracts with TSN and CBC.

I think they had better get a new contract with FOX going, if they want any shot of ratings. And here's the kicker, the NHL hasn't reached the bottom of the pit yet.

NBA and NFL, you had better pay close attention to the disastor the NHL made for themselves.
