I knew it wasn't a very good notebook but it's the best I could get without coughing up my own money. I know in the future I'm going to get either an IBM or a DELL notebook. I've used both of those laptops and is satisfied with what they provide in terms of size, battery life, stability, and other stuff. It's even worse that the battery is now shot (doesn't last for more than 5 minutes--but that is sort of my doing). Anyways, I'm going to have to live with it until I get a new laptop; not sure when that'll be because I've finished my CS major and I don't see blocks of time in my schedule that warrants me to bring it.

But anyways, getting back to topic--everything tomguy says is pretty much true

They do have socket adapters for CPUs...

But this is completely different. The socket adapters are so people don't have to buy new motherboard when they want to upgrade their CPUs. But with RAM, if you need to upgrade it, you'd need to upgrade your motherboard anyway. People don't buy (more expensive) notebook RAM to put into desktops, so that's why it isn't done.

I can assure you with 100% certianty, there is no such thing as a "RAM adapter" to make notebook RAM fit into a PC.

Well, I was thinking there was something you could set it in that would be the same size as the notebook ram and on the other end it would be expanded for the size of a regular desktop slot. Right now i've found nothing so i'm just going to try and sell it.

Notebook RAM is completely different. It's MUCH smaller.

It WOULD be possible to convert it, if you could solder REALLY well, and had a blank DDR board to solder it to. You'd need a pinout of each contact and you'd need to make sure you soldered each one of the 188 contacts to the PC properly.

In other words, for the effort and cost of converting it, it's cheaper and easier to just buy the PC RAM.

my notebook can have a CPU upgrade. I've opended the thing and it looks like a standard CPU... My RAM is upgradeable to. In addition, my local computer store has RAM for notebooks and the RAM is made by the typical manufactures like Kingston and Muskin for example.

Hmm, I've found RAM to be fairly swappable though in my experience....

Most laptop parts are pretty much custom-made for the computer in question. I wouldn't even count on swapping it with another laptop.

Yeah, what neotransotaku's already said. You can't do it.

Sell the RAM. I don't know if you'll get much for it from a conventional store or not though.... If they're anything like the stores around here, they'll rip you off and you're better to make a private sale if possible.

Thanks for your input. I wasn't really thinking that there was anyway to convert it but if it was possible it would've been nice. I'm gonna take the two sticks down to Fry's sometime this week to see if I can get enough to get a single 512mb for my two 512mb ones. If not I'll just stick with the 1024mb that I have right now.

As far as I know, I've never heard of anyone using laptop memory for desktop computers. What you could probably do is try to sell of the memory and use that money for the desktop...or you could save it for you next laptop...or something...

i know there is probably power and cooling issues invovled but more trouble than it is worth.

Okay, so my laptop got fried when someone decided to relieve themselves on it. So now I'm trying to salvage as much of it as possible, so I removed the harddrive and i'm gonna by a cable to connect it to a desktop. Then there's the RAM, do any of you know if there is a way to get laptop RAM onto a desktop, or is this just not possible. Those were basicaly the only two things that I could get off of the laptop, everything else was finely coated, which sucks a lot and also is probably one of the worse smells ever. NE ways, I would greatly appreciate any of your input on how I could possible convert my RAM, thanks.
